WHAT IS ORANG UTAN?? :-
Orang Utan is a unique animal which has a face of a man that lives in the forest. Their name 'Orang Utan' is derived from the word 'Orang' which simply means "person" and 'Hutan' which simply means "forest", thus, "Person of the forest".
*Fun Facts* : Did you know that Orang Utan shares 96.4% of our DNA??
_for more information, visit - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orangutan
WE BET YOU KNEW THAT ORANG UTANS' ARE EXTINCTING SOON.
But, YOU may not know WHY...
So, WHAT IS THE CAUSES OF EXTINCTION OF ORANG UTANS??
Well, first and foremost, HUMAN.
WE - HUMAN, are the BIGGEST THREAT to them.
This is simply because all of the activities that causes the extinction of them are done by us. Don't belief?
See below....
- Deforestation which causes Habitat Loss
Forest is the home for all Orang Utans. But, because of humans' greed and ignorance, trees are being chopped down and the number of forests are decreasing. Destroying the forests means destroying the homes of Orang Utans.
- Pet Trade
Although it's illegal, but, still continues to thrive today. Many infants of Orang Utans are taken for the pet trade every year. This is done by killing the mother and take the babies. Estimation of 4-5 Orang Utans die for every baby reaching the market.
Now, can you see that HUMAN is the BIGGEST THREAT TO THEM???
But, WAIT!
YOU CAN CHANGE THAT!
You can make HUMAN be the HOPE for their Survival!
HOW?? :-
- Buy certified woods
Make sure that any timber products you buy carry a timber certification label. Without this label, timber may well stem for illegal or controversial sources. This can stop illegal deforestation because no money is earned from it if each and everyone of you ONLY buy certified woods.
- Encourage your supermarket to ensure products use sustainable palm oil
A significant area of Orang Utans' habitat is in danger of being converted into palm oil plantations. Palm oil is found in 10 products on supermarket shelves yet the vast majority of manufacturing companies do not know WHERE their palm oil comes from. So, encourage your supermarket to take action to source more sustainable palm oil by joining the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil.
- Reduce your carbon footprint
Electricity is one of the biggest producers of carbon emissions, so, everytime you make a coffee or turn on the TV, you are adding to the global warming. Turn off electrical devices when not in use. Also, you can reduce your consumption of meat. This, can as well help saving the forests and Orang Utans!
- 3R; Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
Reducing consumption lowers the energy use and waste generation at the source, and so makes the greatest impact on protecting our environments. Try purchasing long-lasting goods that are as free of toxins as possible. This can help save the homes of Orang Utans! - the forest.
Now, by following the steps above, YOU can save the FOREST and therefore, SAVE THEM!
